Learning targets
- Separate observations from inferences and opinions.
- Record observations with measured values and units at the time they happen.
Observation vs inference
An observation is what you directly saw, heard or measured. An inference is what you conclude from it. An opinion is a judgment that isn't backed by evidence. Good notebooks keep them apart — and label inferences as such.
Numbers with units, right away
Write values when you measure them, with units. Observations shouldn't be collected somewhere else and copied in later.
Second-year extension:
- Explain the uncertainty of a measurement and how it limits a conclusion.
