Module 4

Sketches & Annotations

Labeled, dimensioned sketches that communicate a design.

35 min 0/1 skill checksDesignVisual Representations of Data and Information

Builds on: Technical Observations

Learning targets

  • Label every component in a sketch.
  • Add dimension lines with values and units taken from real measurements.
  • Caption every figure.

A sketch is evidence

Annotated sketches help the reader understand ideas. Name every part, show dimensions with units, and caption the figure so it can be referred to (Fig. 3).

Dimensions come from the part

A dimension is a measurement you took — ScribEN never fills one in for you. If you haven't measured it yet, leave it and say so.

Second-year extension:
  • Add materials callouts and an assembly note to a technical drawing.
Follow-up notebook task
Annotated sketch of my current part

Sketch the part you're building now. Label every component, add at least two measured dimensions, and caption the figure.
